Dr. Jenna V. Congdon Assistant Professor - Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE)

Dr. Jenna Congdon is a professor at Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE); in working in collaboration with the Edmonton Valley Zoo, the Congdon ‘Cognition, Learning, & Animal Welfare’ (C.L.A.W.) Laboratory was established in Fall 2022. Dr. Congdon’s former graduate studies investigated the perception and communication of predator threat in black-capped chickadees at the University of Alberta, followed by additional research of the navigational abilities of desert harvester ants in Arizona, and York University postdoctoral work with Sumatran orangutans as a part of Toronto Zoo’s Animal Welfare Science team. Dr. Congdon has authored 26 scientific publications and is the co-organizer of the International Conference on Comparative Cognition (known as “CO3”). The current research program with Edmonton Valley Zoo has included studying cognitive abilities using touchscreens with emus, fur seals, and harbor seals, while students’ research has spanned a variety of species to provide welfare data, evidence-based habitat recommendations, and novel enrichment.
